The Port of Brownsville is a deep water seaport in Brownsville, Texas, and is the southern terminus of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The port is located just eight miles from the border of Mexico at the Rio Grande. It's hinterland is most of Northern Mexico, including the large industrial city of Monterrey, Nuevo León. The mouth of the Brownsville ship channel is the old harbor of Los Brazos de Santiago, which was the landing place of Spanish conquistador Pineda in 1519, and others.
The Port of Brownsville is governed by the Brownsville Navigation District, a political subdivision of the State of Texas. The District is guided by an elected Board of Commissioners which establishes the policies, rules, rates and regulations of the Port and approves all contractual obligations.
